Introducing “Mark”!

Hello. My name is Anthony Garcia and I am a filmmaker. I am working on the edit for my first feature film Overcoming Going Under and somewhere along the way (probably while looking at the budget and trying to figure out how to raise a little money to help finish ocgu) I thought it might be worth while to start a blog about DIY filmmaking.

See I got Overcoming Going Under in the can for a little under $10,000 – and that included the camera! What is considered an “Ultra Low Budget” Film by the Academy or SAG is anything under $500,000. There are a few more expenses along the road to getting OCGU done, but when it’s all told I will have made a movie that is WAY below what they call “Ultra Low.”

So I will be posting about my process and little things I come across that might be helpful to the filmmaker on a shoestring. Which brings us to what will be the first “test case” for this blog – “Mark.” “Mark” is a short I wrote about a hitman. Brian and I at Aught Media will be shooting it over the next little while and writing more, because it seems to us that this could be a series.

I will post interesting things about Overcoming Going Under when they will be of interest to the indie film maker but mostly I’ll post about that project on it’s own blog. Here you can follow the steps we’ll take in making “Mark” as well as anything I come across that I think you might be interested in. So stay tuned! Feel free to write and ask questions as well.

    Anthony,

Off-topic, what are you doing (or rather what did you do) for music/soundtrack? We’re undertaking a similar micro-budget production, but the music needs to be ‘just so.’ We’ve found some tracks we love, but they’re all by established recording artists (not mainstream, mind you, but known and signed). Any recommendations?

    Hello Guin, and welcome!
Well I am a musician and I know a lot of musicians so I am either using songs from friends or recording original music for the score and soundtrack.

I am trying to get permission for on Steely Dan song for Overcoming Going Under, but it is proving difficult. there are several levels of permission to get for music and it is really difficult and confusing.

I recommend finding music from friends who are musicians or finding music online through a creative commons license. Google creative commons and you should come up with some leads.
